Advice on a half stack
« on: May 08, 2006, 08:32:36 PM »
I\'m really looking for a Marshall but I don\'t really want to spend over 600 or 700 bucks. I wangt to get as much power and sound as possible. I want something really loud but something that sounds great. Any suggestions?

Dude, if you want quality, you\'re gonna have to pay for it.  Any decent 100w tube head is gonna run at least $1000 these days - brand new that is.  And that $600 - $700 you\'re looking to spend will get you a decent 4x12 slant cab.

Now, if you\'re willing to go with a used rig, then you might get lucky and find one at a pawn shop or maybe on e-bay. But, as I\'m sure you already know, never buy anything you can\'t play through first.

As for Marshalls, you might want to look into the Valvestate head if you\'re looking to stay within the above mentioned budget.  One thing though, if you get a Valvestate head, you should run it through a Marshall 4x12 instead of the matching Valvestate 4x10.  The 4x10 sounds thin. The other new Marshall head that I thought sounded good is the JCM2000.  But, then again, that head sells for over $1000.

I know I\'m gonna get ribbed for this one, but I love my Peavey XXX half stack. I\'ve got gain for days, and the best tone I\'ve ever got from a rig. 3 channels with separate eq\'s, a switchable effects loop with level settings for both send and return, and the ability to use either 6L6 or EL34 power amp tubes.  The head goes for better than $1000, and the matching cab (which I highly recomend) goes for $550 brand new.  But, you can obviously find good deals on this stuff on E-bay.

I\'m not gonna say much about Mesa Boogie stuff because it\'s going to be way out of your budget to start with. And besides that, I\'m not a fan of Mesa Boogie anyway.

Hope this helps.

You can\'t go wrong with the valvestate man. I can plug directly into my head with no effects and get raw power and tone. Of course emg pickups definitly help. I would recommend the older version of the valvestate though if you can find on. I think the model is 100V. I\'ll have to look. The newer one (VS100) is a great amp also, I just like the tone of the older one better. Also throw you a Groove Tube 12ax7-M ( the old mullard re-issue tube) in it. WOW!

Pat, I\'ve been using a Peavey XXX during my time in Slavemachine and now The Fifth, and I love it. I can get all the sounds I need out of it. I\'ve tried it with several different 4x12 cabs (Marshall, Laney, Peavey, VHT) and found that the VHT cabs fit best for me. And the switchable effects loop on the head is a big plus. This amp seriously rocks.

Steve - I want my Valvestate back you bastard!! HA! I need a smaller/lighter backup. Which model is it, I\'m gonna search for the same one.

I\'ll say it again, if you want that tradditional Marshall crunch but don\'t wanna break the bank for an old JCM800... Laney AOR series amps from the mid-80\'s are the way to go.

The Peavey Valveking will run you about 700 bucks, the head is around 450(i think)  All tube, 120 watts. Yes, thats cheap as hell for a Tube amp, but its a great amp, thats going to be my next purchace actually.

Also, I forgot about this.  Peavey just came out with a new amp, the Windsor...... a peavey rep. told the guy at my local store(at NAMM) that the amp IS a JCM800,  but its the same price as the Valveking,  and it only has 1 channel.

You may want to find a used Peavey Ultra amp too. I currently
use a Peavey XXX, but I owned a Peavey Ultra before I
bought this. They are like the fore-runner to the XXX and have
really good sounds once you learn the tricks of running the
tone settings. You could probably find a used Ultra for a very
good price. I dragged that thing around everywhere for 5
years and never had a problem with it at all. I never even
replaced any of the tubes in that time period and it always
sounded the same. I had a Marshall 6100 LM 30th Anniversary
head too, but always seem to prefer sound of the Peaveys.
I had a Marshall Valvestate - its good for practice, but once
you get out in larger spaces the solid state buzz really seems
kick in and it sounds like an icepick in your ears.

I actually have a Marshall VS 100 and I like it just fine. There are no problems with the solid state buzz mentioned by estring, if you set the EQ and contour properly. The amp is actually a tube/solid state hybrid. Tube pre and solid state power.

It is a 100 watt amp, which is actually plenty for almost any show you might do, given that you are generally gonna run into a PA, and a lot of sound guys hate it when bands have overblown stage volume.

I am looking to sell it, as I am actually trying to downgrade. I just want a 2x12 combo amp as they are easier to carry, and fit in tighter spots...

My VS100 has 3 channels - clean and two distorted, reverb, and a footswitch.

I have a Marshall 4x12 cab, albiet a low end Marshall cab.

I spent about $850.00 on the whole thing but will sell it for $550.00...

The amp has been gigged, with minor cosmetic flaws, but functions, and sounds perfect!!!

Like I said, your upgrade can mean my downgrade.... Hit me up if you are interested...
